Stena Line has upgraded health and safety at its Irish Sea operations with a new multi-camera video telematics system from Camera Telematics.

Over 100 terminal tractors, buses, and luggage vans across five UK and Irish ports now feature the system, helping streamline incident investigation, safeguard staff and visitors, and reduce fleet risk.

An initial trial at Dublin Port confirmed the solution’s effectiveness before a phased rollout across Fishguard, Belfast, Birkenhead, and Cairnryan. The deployment required close collaboration with drivers, stevedores, and their union to communicate benefits, secure buy-in, and address privacy concerns.

Vehicles were equipped with the iC360 connected mobile digital video recorder (MDVR), featuring a 1TB internal hard drive, five-camera setups for terminal tractors and buses, and three-camera configurations for luggage vans. In-cab monitors with side and reversing camera triggers assist drivers and detect nearby vulnerable port workers. Terminal tractors include forward, rear, driver-facing, and side-view cameras, while buses feature internal devices monitoring the passenger aisle.

Insights from investigations are being used to assess compliance with safety procedures and prevent recurrence. The technology has improved safety behaviours among drivers, stevedores, and ferry crews, contributing to a reduction in vehicle-related incidents and enhancing port efficiency by lowering operational downtime.

Eamon Fortune, Senior Port Manager – Irish Seas at Stena Line, said: “Working closely with Camera Telematics, we have implemented a technology solution that is delivering real value to our business in terms of ongoing safety, risk reduction and performance improvements.”

Stephen Petticrew, Port Operational Efficiency Lead, added: “Camera Telematics’ solution has already been a game-changer for health and safety, helping us to gain clarity over what has occurred and mitigate the impact of port risk.”
