US-based Sanmina, a global electronics manufacturer serving medical, defence, aerospace, automotive, communications, and cloud sectors, has enhanced its Fermoy medical facility in north Cork. The development is expected to generate up to 150 skilled roles in engineering, quality, manufacturing, and operations, with recruitment already in progress.
Founded in 1980, Sanmina operates across 21 countries and employs around 35,000 staff. The Fermoy facility, opened in 1989, is the company’s largest medical site in Europe and is now equipped with advanced manufacturing capabilities, including a newly commissioned automation line. The development also incorporates a new ISO8 clean room and high-volume production lines dedicated to wearable medical devices.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin attended the inauguration on 3 November, highlighting the boost to local employment and Ireland’s attractiveness as a centre for international medtech investment.
Sean Moran, SVP of IMS Europe at Sanmina, said the Fermoy site benefits from a long-standing culture of innovation and quality. The new development ensures the site can support the growth of global medical device clients while providing stable, high-quality employment in the region.
Sanmina recently acquired ZT Systems’ data centre infrastructure manufacturing business from AMD for $3 billion (€2.59 billion), further extending its technology and production footprint. Mary Buckley, executive director of IDA Ireland, noted that the Fermoy investment demonstrates Sanmina’s long-term commitment to the south-west region and the company’s role in strengthening Ireland’s medtech ecosystem.
The Fermoy site now integrates state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure with workforce skill growth, ensuring long-term operational resilience and supporting the company’s international supply chain needs.
