Ireland’s Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed Mark Cullen as its new chief executive officer, moving from his interim role earlier this year. The board completed a competitive recruitment process before formally appointing Cullen, recognising his extensive experience within the organisation.

Cullen has spent 25 years at the HSA, taking on diverse operational and leadership responsibilities. His expertise spans workplace health and safety, chemicals regulation, product safety, and national accreditation. Prior to his public sector career, he worked in the UK construction industry as a qualified civil engineer, giving him insight into private sector compliance challenges.

Patricia Byron, HSA chairperson, highlighted Cullen’s knowledge and leadership as vital for maintaining high standards across the organisation’s remit. She noted his ability to support both worker protection and enterprise development while enhancing Ireland’s international reputation for regulatory excellence.

In his first statement as CEO, Cullen emphasised his commitment to the HSA’s strategic ambitions. He cited the importance of safeguarding worker health and safety, managing chemicals and products safely, and delivering a robust national accreditation service. Cullen also stressed collaboration with the board, colleagues, and stakeholders to drive performance and compliance.

The appointment ensures continuity of leadership as the HSA advances key regulatory initiatives across Ireland. Cullen’s extensive experience positions the authority to maintain operational efficiency and regulatory credibility in the evolving workplace safety landscape.
