South Korean construction firm Lotte Construction has obtained Private Safety Experience Education Centre certification from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency for its Safety ON training facility, enabling workers who complete training there to have their mandatory safety and health education hours recognised at double the standard rate under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
According to The Asia Business Daily, the certification system requires a comprehensive review of a facility's infrastructure, equipment, instructors and programmes before qualifications are granted, ensuring only facilities meeting all regulatory requirements receive recognition.
Safety ON, opened in February 2022, spans approximately 1,160 square metres and is designed to allow participants to directly experience 18 types of accident scenarios commonly encountered on construction sites. The centre features 14 safety management simulation facilities covering scenarios including crane and ladder overturning and falls from openings, alongside four health management simulation facilities including first aid training.
A dedicated virtual reality room provides indirect simulations of a further 33 accident types, including drops and collisions, using VR equipment.
Since opening, the facility has trained a cumulative total of 12,300 participants including Lotte Construction headquarters and field staff, partner companies, external organisations, university students and, this year, newly appointed labour inspectors from South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor.
Training has been extended to students from Gyeongbok University in 2024 and Dongguk University in 2025, broadening the centre's reach beyond the construction sector.
"We will expand opportunities for more people to receive safety experience training at Safety ON, leading the way in spreading a culture of safety and preventing industrial accidents," a Lotte Construction representative said.
