Recognised for its comprehensive approach to workplace safety last year, Longford County Council secured the Health & Safety Excellence Award – Public Sector at the Health & Safety Excellence Awards 2025 for its organisation-wide safety management system, developed to protect employees, contractors, and members of the public in a high-risk operational environment.
Operating across a diverse range of services, the Council prioritised the implementation of a structured and robust safety framework to ensure that everyone working on or interacting with its activities can return home safely each day. Central to this approach is its registration to ISO 45001:2018, demonstrating a clear commitment to best practice, accountability, and continuous improvement in health and safety management.
Safety is embedded into daily operations across the organisation, with consistent processes, clear responsibilities, and active engagement at all levels. This integrated approach enables effective risk management, supports compliance, and reinforces a strong safety culture throughout the Council’s activities and services.
“Longford County Council has demonstrated a deep and comprehensive commitment to safety, effectively managing health and safety programmes across the entire organisation. The submission clearly illustrates how safety is embedded into day-to-day operations, reinforcing its status as a top priority. Judges praised the dedication of all involved in maintaining high standards across all areas,” the judging panel said.
The recognition reflects rising standards across the Health & Safety Excellence Awards, where public sector organisations are increasingly recognised. Longford County Council’s achievement highlights how a well-governed, standards-driven approach can deliver lasting improvements in high-risk environments.
