Seven food businesses across Ireland were issued with closure orders during May following food safety breaches identified by inspectors, highlighting ongoing compliance challenges across the food and hospitality sector.

The enforcement actions were issued under food safety legislation by environmental health officers within the HSE and officers of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). According to the regulator, closure orders are applied where conditions present, or are likely to present, a risk to public health.

The affected businesses operated across multiple food environments including retail, hospitality, takeaway and restaurant settings. Reported issues included evidence of pest activity, inadequate hygiene controls, unsafe food storage practices, failures in cleaning standards and insufficient food safety monitoring procedures.

Examples outlined in enforcement notices included rodent contamination risks, inadequate protection of food packaging and storage areas, failures in temperature control processes, insufficient handwashing facilities and operational shortcomings linked to documented food safety procedures.

Several cases also identified failures relating to Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) implementation, with inspectors noting that food safety controls had either not been maintained or were not being followed consistently in practice.

Commenting on the enforcement activity, the FSAI said the issues identified point to failures in basic food safety controls and reinforced that food safety management systems must be actively implemented, maintained and monitored rather than existing solely as documented procedures.

The regulator noted continued concerns relating to hygiene standards, cleaning practices and evidence of pest activity in some premises, describing these controls as fundamental requirements for food businesses operating under Irish food legislation.

The latest closure orders reinforce the importance of maintaining strong operational controls, workforce training and documented compliance systems across food environments. For employers and operators, the enforcement activity serves as a reminder that effective health and safety management remains essential to protecting public health and maintaining business continuity.
