A renewed push for safety improvements on the N15 between Stranorlar and Castlefin is highlighting the importance of targeted road engineering and sustained investment in Northern Ireland’s neighbouring Donegal road network.
Ballybofey councillor Patrick McGowan has called for dangerous corners along the route to be re-lined, proposing that Donegal County Council write to the Minister for Transport and the Minister of State for Transport and Roads to highlight the need for action. Donegal Live reported the motion on 13 October 2026, bringing renewed attention to safety on a busy national road serving East Donegal.
The proposal comes amid wider efforts to improve the N15 corridor. According to the Donegal Daily’s report on the council discussion, McGowan described the road as inadequate for its traffic volumes and highlighted the need to address hazardous sections. Donegal County Council indicated that a letter seeking a meeting with the ministers would be sent, while noting that improvements along the route have been raised repeatedly with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
For Health & Safety professionals, the issue illustrates how road infrastructure forms an essential part of wider risk prevention. Clear road markings and better-defined corners can help drivers interpret the road layout, particularly where traffic volumes, alignment and visibility create challenging driving conditions. While markings alone cannot eliminate collision risks, they can form part of a coordinated approach alongside appropriate road design, maintenance and driver awareness.
There is also a longer-term infrastructure dimension. The council identified the ongoing Corcam Bends project, between Stranorlar and Killygordon, as one scheme intended to address part of the corridor. Further national road projects will require support through the council’s planning process and funding from TII before additional improvements can progress. The distinction is important: the request for re-lining is a call for action, not confirmation that the proposed works have been approved or scheduled.
Donegal has also seen investment in other sections of the N15. In June 2026, road improvement works between Liscooley and Castlefin included drainage and structural improvements, resurfacing and new road markings. Highland Radio reported on the works, demonstrating how targeted maintenance and engineering projects can contribute to the wider upkeep of the national road network.
For the sector, the lesson is direct: safer roads depend on combining practical measures that address immediate hazards with sustained investment in infrastructure. Donegal’s call for improvements on the N15 provides an opportunity to progress targeted safety works while maintaining momentum on longer-term projects that support safer journeys for local communities and through-traffic alike.
