Council backs catalytic converter recycling plant amid safety and jobs row

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has approved US firm Techemet’s plan to open a catalytic converter recycling facility at Carnbane Way. The project aims to process components from across Ireland, repurposing a former demolition depot.

The decision has sparked controversy. Local operator Environmental Products and Services Ltd (EPAS) warned it will close its neighbouring factory if the plan proceeds, citing health risks and competitive pressures. The move could result in dozens of job losses and raises questions about balancing industrial growth with community safety and employment stability.
