Compressed gas cylinder accidents claim two lives in 2025

Two fatal incidents in early 2025 have highlighted the dangers of mishandling compressed gas cylinders, the Workplace Safety and Health Council has warned. In both cases, carbon dioxide cylinders became airborne and struck nearby workers, leading to their deaths. A third, non-fatal incident in July saw a cylinder rupture and cause an explosion.

Investigations point to improper securing of cylinders and accidental valve damage as triggers. The council is urging companies to tighten risk controls, ensure proper handling, and maintain robust safety protocols when working with gas cylinders to prevent similar tragedies.
