Catalytic converter recycling plant approval sparks safety and jobs row
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has approved Techemet’s plan to recycle catalytic converters in Carnbane, despite warnings of health risks and potential job losses. The site, a former demolition depot, will process car components from across Ireland.
Neighbouring firm Environmental Products and Services Ltd (EPAS) has warned it will shut its local factory, citing safety concerns and competitive pressures, with dozens of jobs at risk. EPAS managing director Jim O’Neill said the company is already shifting operations to Houston and Manchester.
